Nashville police confirm seven dead including shooter after Christian school shooting

Disturbing Instagram messages have emerged sent by Audrey Hale, the suspect in the Monday’s shooting at a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, moments before the massacre took place in which Hale wishes farewell to a friend and states: “One day this will make more sense. I’ve left behind more than enough evidence behind. But something bad is about to happen.”

Local police have meanwhile released surveillance footage showing events leading up to the killing of six people, including three children, at the private Covenant School in the Green Hills suburb of the southern city on Monday morning.

The footage shared by Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) captured Hale, 28, arriving in a silver Honda Fit car, parking and then proceeding towards the school before entering by a side door to open fire on staff and students.

Hale was eventually killed at the scene by a team of five police officers, a moment captured in graphic bodycam video also since released by the MNPD.

Police said that the suspect, who was armed with two assault-style rifles and a handgun, was a former student at the institution who may have harboured “resentment” against it.

Students Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney, all aged nine, died in the incident. Headmistress Katherine Koonce, 60, was among of the adult victims, according to police, as were staff members Cynthia Peak and Mike Hill, both aged 61.

Police release chilling CCTV footage of Nashville gunman shooting way into school

The footage shared on Twitter by Metro Nashville Police showed the shooter, identified as Audrey Elizabeth Hale, 28, arriving in a Honda Fit car, parking, and then proceeding towards the school.

Hale is seen shooting down the glass double doorway of the school before opening fire on students and staff.

Footage also shows Hale walking around the school, around different hallways armed with an assault rifle, coming in and out of different rooms.

Police said: “Hale drove to Covenant Church/School in her Honda Fit this morning, parked, and shot her way into the building. She was armed with 2 assault-type guns and a 9-millimetre pistol.”

Nashville police release bodycam footage from Christian school shooting

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has released a six minute video on YouTube composed of bodycam footage from two officers, Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo, who were part of the team that entered that school to “neutralise” the threat posed by Audrey Hale yesterday.

Be warned, the video is extremely intense, not to say harrowing, as the screenshot below illustrates.

Nashville shooter believed to be planning more attacks on local mall and family members

Local police chief John Drake appeared on CBS Mornings today with a fresh update about yesterday’s atrocity, telling Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson: “We strongly believe there was going to be some other targets, including maybe family members, and one of the malls here in Nashville. And that just did not happen.”

Chief Drake said a search of Audrey Hale’s home had turned up two additional weapons “and I believe some more maps pertaining to maybe some thinking about some other incidents”.

He confirmed that Hale had attended the school ”and had some history there” and added: “What detectives have said so far is there's possibly some resentment for having to go to that school.”

Chief Drake said the attack had been “targeted and planned” and explained: “We have a manifesto, we have a booklet, that shows the exactly what she had planned to do.

“We have maps that show the entry point into the school, the weapons that were going to be used, the clothing that she was gonna wear, and she had drawn it up, almost like a cartoon character. It was exactly what she had on during this incident.”

Tennessee governor who signed permitless gun carry comes under fire after Nashville school shooting

A gun safety advocate has responsed to yesterday’s mass shooting in Nashville by attacking the state’s Republican governor for signing open carry legislation.

Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, which advocates for gun safety, also criticised Governor Bill Lee on social media his slow response to events at The Covenant School.

“Tennessee @GovBillLee hasn’t had time yet to tweet his thoughts and prayers for Covenant School, but when he does, remind him that this is exactly why police and citizens opposed the permitless carry bill he signed into law at a gun maker’s factory in 2021,” Ms Watts tweeted.
