Teenager Phoebe Gill reveals she watched Gilmore Girls to beat pre-run nerves at first Olympics

There are 27 gold medals up for grabs on day eight of the Olympics as Team GB look to extend their record start to Paris 2024 on what is already turning into a super Saturday.

It was the final day of rowing this morning and Great Britain ended a hugely successful regatta by claiming a superb gold in the men’s eight and taking a creditable bronze medal in the women’s eight. Emma Wilson then added bronze in the women’s windsurfing as she dominated the class all week but could only come third in the medal race.

The women’s 100m final is the pick of the late action where Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita hoping to challenge the might of the USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson and Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price.

Before then, Simone Biles is back in action and goes for her third gold of the Games in the vault final, while Max Whitlock bids for a historic third consecutive gold on pommel horse and Jake Jarman targets a medal on the floor. Fresh off his stunning victory in the mountain bike, Tom Pidcock also features in the men’s cycling road race.

And the swimming is set to produce another night of drama with Katie Ledecky looking to continue her dominance of the 800m free and Great Britain able to field a strong side in the mixed 4x100m medley relay – especially if Adam Peaty has sufficiently recovered from Covid to be selected.

    Olympics 2024: Men’s doubles final

In the tennis, the men’s doubles final has gone to a tie-break third set between the US pairing of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram and the Australian duo of John Peers and Matthew Ebden. After an early break, the Aussies raced into an 8-4 lead, and though the US clawed it back to 9-8, it wasn’t enough as the Australian pair broke the US serve to take gold at 10-8.

The women’s singles final, between Zheng of China and Croatia’s Vekic, will be up soon, as will the men’s bronze medal match between Auger-Aliassime and Musetti.

IOC president weighs in on Olympic boxing gender controversy: ‘This is the definition of a woman’

More on this later, ahead of Imane Khelif’s bout at 4.22pm BST, but for now...

The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, has criticised the “hate speech” whipped up in response to the boxing gender controversy at Paris 2024, as he defended the IOC’s decision to allow Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif to fight at the Games.

The pair were disqualified from last year’s boxing World Championships for failing to meet gender eligibility criteria.

On Thursday, Algeria’s Khelif won her bout in just 46 seconds, with opponent Angela Carini saying afterwards that she had “never felt a punch like this”. Taiwanese fighter Lin also won her women’s featherweight (-57kg) fight on Friday with a unanimous decision victory over Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova.

What is EOR in the Olympics?

Thirty-seven athletes are representing the Refugee Olympic Team (EOR) in Paris at the Olympic Games - and hopes are high that the team could win its first medal.

Paris 2024 will be the third time the Refugee Olympic Team will compete at the Games, with 24 men and 13 women, all of whom hold refugee status in their host nations, set to compete across 12 sports in France.

The Refugee Olympic Team was created as a symbol of hope and to highlight the plight of refugees worldwide. There are around 120 million people globally who have been forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution or oppression, a figure that has almost doubled since the Rio Games eight years ago.

Team GB’s Louie Hinchliffe steals show as Olympics set for new 100m rivalry

On the opening morning of the men’s 100m at the Stade de France, Noah Lyles was in his element as the world’s eyes fell on him. Wearing a crown of white beads and with his fingernails painted with the flag of the United States, Lyles exudes main character energy and expected to win comfortably, like he does in every race.

Hinchliffe carried on his breakthrough year with an impressive display on his Olympics debut, clocking 9.98 seconds. Beaten by Lyles in London last month in his final race before the Olympics, Hinchliffe was not shy to admit he sought revenge and declared there will be more to come in his bid to reach Sunday night’s final.

“It was good to get him back after London, it was a good feeling,” he said. “I think the pressure, the environment will bring more out of me.”

Olympics 2024 medal table: China leads the gold count in Paris

The 2024 Olympic Games is underway in Paris, where the United States are once again favourites to top the medal table at the end of the 17-day festival of sport.

The USA have finished on top of the table at 18 of the 29 summer Olympics, including the very first in Athens in 1896, and six of the past seven stretching back to America’s home Games in Atlanta in 1996. China punctured that streak in Beijing in 2008, and are proving stiff competition again after finishing one short of America’s 39 golds in Tokyo three years ago. Hosts Japan finished third last time ahead of Great Britain in fourth.

    Olympics 2024: Golf

In the golf, Tommy Fleetwood has taken an outright lead at Le Golf National, moving to 12-under through four holes (and one-under for the day).

That lead pack has been joined by Spain’s Jon Rahm, who’s two-under for the day now.

Schauffele has stayed on -11, but Matsuyama has dropped two shots to move to -9. Belgium’s Thomas Detry is also in the mix at -10, while Rory McIlroy is down at -7.

Olympics 2024: Women’s windsurfing final – WILSON TAKES BRONZE

Wilson has started well, leading at the first mark and just about keeping her lead around the second too.

But despite a confident start, she slips back into third position and all of a sudden there’s quite a lot of distance to make up.

And she finishes in third, taking home a bronze medal behind Italy’s Marta Maggetti in first and Israel’s Sharon Kantor in second.

Every Team GB medal so far at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Add to this a bronze and gold in the women’s and men’s eights respectively...

Emily Craig and Imogen Grant shook off their disappointment of Toyko to win gold in the women’s lightweight double sculls as Team GB added a silver from the rowing men’s pair and a diving bronze, won by Jack Laugher and Anthony Harding in the 3m synchro, on Friday morning.

Rower Helen Glover was denied a historic third gold medal and had to settle for silver in the women’s four on Thurday morning but it was one of three rowing medals for Team GB as Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne and Rebecca Wilde claimed bronze in the women’s double sculls and the men’s four finished third in their final.
