Olympic fans try to match Team GB runner Keely Hodgkinson's speed

Team GB eye more medals at the Olympics on Day 11 of Paris 2024 following a superb gold from Keely Hodgkinson to win the women’s 800m final at the Stade de France in Paris.

After Simone Biles won an 11th Olympic medal to end her redemption tour, today’s action sees Great Britain’s athletics captain Josh Kerr in the men’s 1500m tonight when the world champion battles Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the latest meeting of a bitter rivalry.

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix was bidding to add another diving medal and qualified for the women’s 10m platform with the third highest score yesterday, but she missed out on the podium as China’s Quan Hongchan won a dominant gold to defend her title from Tokyo. There was also disappointment for Scott Brash and Ben Maher in the individual showjumping final.

There’s more action at the velodrome later, with Team GB’s men’s team sprint trio looking to follow Katy Marchant, Emma Finucane and Sophie Capewell’s excellent gold against New Zealand yesterday, while Lewis Richardson returns to the ring on a packed night of boxing. Meanwhile, teenager Sky Brown features in the skateboarding as she attempts to push through a shoulder injury to medal again.

Josh Kerr offers clue to ‘vicious’ 1500m Olympic final strategy against Jakob Ingebrigtsen

Josh Kerr is not afraid to talk and equally willing to translate his fighting talk to the track when he bids to add Olympic gold in an enthralling showdown against his nemesis Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

The men’s 1500m final offers sizzling potential; the Norwegian, who has already captured a personal best of 3mins 26.73secs in the build-up to Paris 2024, must combat both strategy and a fierce pace, with the last four major championship finals all below 3mins 30secs. The trash talk between the pair has added extra spice to a race deep with talent with the event commanding 5000m strength and 800m speed.

Sky Brown suffers major injury concern while qualifying for Olympic skateboarding final

The 16-year-old laid down a score of 84.75 on her first run which proved enough to put her through to the Paris 2024 final in fourth place, but raised concerns after falling heavily in the last of her three runs.

Brown was helped from the bowl with an apparent shoulder injury and concerns were raised given she dislocated her left shoulder in training last month, which at one point put her second Olympic appearance in doubt.

Carefully nursing her injury and appearing close to tears, Brown said: “It was scary falling and feeling it. Definitely it’s a little sore but I’m going to push through.

Olympics 2024: Diving - Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix speaks to the BBC after finishing sixth

“Obviously it wasn’t the result that I wanted. I’m not even upset with the competition - the girls dove better than me today. It wasn’t meant to be. I’m not trying to be macho, I’m not upset with my performance. I’m happy that I’m alive, I’m breathing and I’ve got my family to support me.

“My mum said, ‘just keep smiling, we’re proud of you’. At the end of the day, that’s all I can ask for. I’m so happy to be here at the Olympic Games. It’s been a really long year, and this doesn’t take away from my accomplishments this year. Missing out on one medal doesn’t change who I am.”

    Olympics 2024: Diving - China complete one-two in women’s 10m platform

So it will be a Chinese one-two in the first of the individual events at the Aquatics Centre in Paris as they continue to dominate the diving programme. Can anyone stop a clean sweep of eight golds?

The bronze will go to Kim Mi-Rae, who does more than enough with her final dive to keep Caeli McKay at arm’s length. A disappointed exhale from McKay, but she was beaten by the better diver, Kim vanishing as she hits the water even with hefty strapping on her back and arm. She’s in tears as she embraces her coach, adding individual bronze to synchronised silver.

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix saves her best for last, clearly gutted not to have hit the level she is capable of sooner. A shame for one of Team GB’s big medal hopes after such an impressive semi-final.

Over to the big two. Chen Yuxi can put the pressure on...it’s very, very good, but not perfect. Eights will do it for Quan Hongchan - and 8.5s make totally certain. Quan is queen of the high board once more, defending her crown on the 10m platform.

    GOLD: Quan Hongchan (China) 425.60

    Silver: Chen Yuxi (China) 420.70

Bronze: Kim Mi-rae (North Korea) 372.10

Caeli McKay pinched a very impressive bronze at last year’s World Championships in Japan and was third behind Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, but this is probably the Canadian’s best major meet performance yet. She’s still in the hunt for a medal, keeping up the chase on Kim Mi-rae.

Spendolini-Sirieix’s dream of an individual Olympic medal is done, though. Even a slightly easier - and that is relative in such a demanding event - dive goes somewhat awry, leaving her back in the pack.

Chen Yuxi, though! Runner-up in Tokyo, runner-up at the Worlds earlier this year, but she is going toe-to-toe with her great friend and rival Quan Hongchan. 89.10!

Can Quan answer? Can she ever! 92.40 to open up a gap again - they’ll both finish with a Back 2½ Somersaults 1½ Twists in pike.

A slightly uncomfortable moment for Canada’s Caeli McKay, closer to the board than she’d like to be as she begins her inward somersaults. She’s safely in to the water, though, and with minimal splash - up above Agundez Garcia she climbs, the Mexican having faltered on the same dive moments before.

Kim Mi-rae has ratcheted up the difficulty on her middle dive of five. She ends up bending backwards to try and get her legs around and a clean entry into the water, so it won’t be top marks, but a 72.60 is more than useful.

And a tough afternoon for Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix continues. She was very neat yesterday but she’s yet to quite nail any of her attempts this afternoon, losing yet more ground with scores of seven on her forward three-and-a-half somersaults in pike. A tie for sixth, as things stand - she’ll have to absolutely ace her last two dives to earn a podium place.

At the top of the leaderboard, though, this is where Chen Yuxi will try to close. A 0.1 tarrif advantage isn’t much but an absolutely delightful dive from Chen is rightly rewarded with high marks - and she’s within two points of her teammate with a couple of rounds to come.

    Olympics 2024: Skateboarding - Women’s qualifying

Sky Brown will be competing for a medal in the women’s skateboarding. Her are her thoughts following the preliminary session:

“It flew by, it’s crazy to think [Tokyo was three years ago] and now we’re here and this is going to end today. It’s been an amazing journey, I enjoy a lot of these moments, even these prelims are so cool with this crowd. It’s a huge crowd screaming loud, that’s really cool.”

She took a fall on her third run and seemingly aggrivated her pre-existing shoulder injury. When asked how it was holding up she replied: “I feel good. I’m just happy to be here. I honestly didn’t know if I’d be able to be here but I stoked to show my style and my skating as best I can.

“On my last run I felt my shoulder a little bit and that was scary. I don’t want it to get worse, I’m already going to need to get surgery after this. If I make it to the finals I just want to put my best out there, the best I can do with this [injury] and fight through it.

“I love the crowd, the nerves, the pressure, I love this stuff. It’s super cool and I’ve been doing it from a young age so I’m used to it. I love how the crowd hypes us up but I do get pretty nervous.”

    Olympics 2024: Skateboarding - Women’s qualifying

Heat four is done and dusted with Sky Brown securing a place in the women’s skateboarding final. That session gets going around 4pm this evening so plenty to look forward to there.

The reigning Olympic champion, Yosozumi Sakura, has been eliminated but there are quite a few potential gold medallists competing against Brown.

With her shoulder injury still playing up it’ll be a tough ask for her to improve on the bronze medal she won in Tokyo. Here are the final qualifying standings:

    1. Hiraki Cocona (JPN) - 88.07
    2. Bryce Wettstein (USA) - 85.65
    3. Kusaki Hinano (JPN) - 85.11
    4. Sky Brown (GBR) - 84.75
    5. Heili Sirvio (FIN) - 83.42
    6. Arisa Trew (AUS) - 82.95
    7. Naia Laso (ESP) - 82.49
    8. Dora Varella (BRA) - 82.29

    Olympics 2024: Diving - women’s 10m platform final

A slight error from Kim Mi-rae opens the door for Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, the North Korean not quite getting her entry right. But Spendolini-Sirieix struggled a touch with her tuck position yesterday, consistently marked below her other dives in the position - and a 62.40 sees her lose ground both on Kim and Mexico’s Gabriela Agundez Garcia, who produced a smashing back three-and-a-half somersaults.

A gap has opened, though, between the best and the rest. It’s not quite flawless from Quan Hongchan but a couple of 9s and an 8.5 wil do rather nicely.

Chen Yuxi lays down an immediate mark, up in the nines with the judges and out-performing her two predecessors on the platform even with a slightly lower tarrif.

What has her teammate got as an opening gambit? Even better! Perfect 10s! A maximum 90 points for the defending champion.
