Rail passengers travelling to and from Clapham Junction and Richmond face “major disruption” today (12 February) as emergency services respond to a “casualty on the tracks”.

Some lines are currently closed between Clapham Junction, Hounslow and Richmond as emergency services deal with the incident between Twickenham and Putney.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police told The Independent: “Officers were called to Barnes railway station at around 7am today (12 February) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

National Rail said that the “major disruption” is expected to last until 3pm as some lines towards Clapham Junction are “blocked”.

It added that power to the running rails in the area had been “switched off” whilst emergency services dealt with the incident.

Until further notice train services will not serve Barnes station in either direction.

The disruption affects South Western Railway routes between London Waterloo and Hounslow, Twickenham, Staines, Shepperton, Weybridge, Reading and London Waterloo Circular Services.

According to the rail operator: “Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 60 minutes.”

London Waterloo to Weybridge services will divert after Putney, call at Twickenham and Feltham and then as booked, while Weybridge to London Waterloo services will divert after Feltham and before calling at Twickenham and Putney.

National Rail said the London Underground, London Buses, the Elizabeth line and Great Western Railway services are accepting tickets via reasonable routes.

Elsewhere, disruption continued until 9am for travellers using the Stansted Express following overhead wire problems between Cheshunt and Harlow Town last night.

The 8.15am Stansted Airport to Liverpool Street service was delayed until 9.10am, and the 9am and 10.15am trains were delayed until 9.53am and 11.02am, respectively.

In the other direction, the 9.10am Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport train did not depart until 9.55am.

Passengers were issued a “do not travel warning” by the service on Tuesday evening.

All lines are now open following repair work, but delays, alterations and cancellations are still expected as “we recover to our advertised timetable”, said Stansted Express.
