Netflix have released the first trailer for upcoming show The Goop Lab which will see Gwyneth Paltrow explore wellness issues.
Produced and hosted by Paltrow and featuring Goop's chief content officer Elise Loehnen, the series is titled after Paltrow’s lifestyle brand, which launched in 2008.
Each of the six episodes in the first season will focus on a different area of wellness, including female sexual pleasure, therapy and energy healing.
The new trailer promises discussion around “boundary-pushing” wellness topics with experts and practitioners, while a poster features Paltrow against a backdrop that resembles the inside of a vagina.
One featured clip includes a discussion in which Paltrow and Loehnen are asked if they’ve ever examined their own vulvas by a sex therapist.
Another snippet shows a woman commenting that she underwent an “exorcism", while Paltrow then enthusiastically talks about visiting a psychic who she says "knew things" her "own husband" didn't.
But some reactions to the series, which starts on 24 January, are less than impressed, highlighting the company's controversial history.
“The most horrifying thing abt this is the word “lab” which implies some sort of science which goop has NOTHING to do with!!” tweeted writer Amanda Rosenberg.
“Also the boldness of gwynnie coming to us from a vagina — a place she told us to stick jade eggs!!! this whole show is a danger to our health!!”#
In September 2018 Goop paid out $145 million (£110 million) in a settlement with the Orange County District Attorney’s office after advertising jade eggs for sale via Goop, claiming they should be placed inside vaginas to “cleanse them”.
Other supposed health benefits of the eggs – which Goop promoted as a “guarded secret of Chinese royalty in antiquity,” – included apparently being able to balance hormones and improve both vaginal “muscle tone”, and orgasms.
But critics said that placing the eggs inside the vaginal cavity could increase the likelihood of infection, especially as jade was porous and could trap bacteria.
An investigation by the California Food, Drug and Medical Device Task Force prompted Goop to make the million-dollar payout.
The company has also come under fire for promoting “pseudoscience” but equally has been praised for its part in bringing wellness techniques and remedies into popular consciousness.
For its part, Goop has revealed little of the content that will make up their new collaboration with Netflix, only promising it will be “goopy as hell”, in a blog post uploaded to the site.
