Angel Gomes will leave Manchester United this week according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with no progress made in contract negotiations between the player and the club.

Gomes’s contract is set to expire on Tuesday and Solskjaer does not expect him to extend his stay, despite saying earlier this month that an agreement was “not too far away”.

The United manager was more pessimistic on Monday morning, ahead of United's Premier League trip to play Brighton and Hove Albion.

When asked whether Gomes would be leaving United this week, Solskjaer said: “I've got no news, nothing, so it doesn't look like it.

"I’ve not heard from them last night or this morning, it seems like they haven’t managed to agree. The answer is probably short and ‘yes [he's leaving]’, then.”

Gomes will be able to leave Old Trafford as a free agent, with Chelsea understood to be among the clubs interested in signing the highly-rated youngster.

The 19-year-old has only made 10 appearances for United in total, with three starts under Solskjaer this season, all of them coming in the Europa League.

Gomes became the youngest player to represent United since Duncan Edwards at the end of the 2016/17 season when handed a debut off the substitutes' bench by former manager Jose Mourinho.

The attacking midfielder went on to captain England to win the Under-17 World Cup later that year, playing alongside the likes of Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden.

United tied down several academy graduates to extended contracts earlier this season, with Tahith Chong, Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood committing to new terms.

But the protracted negotiations with Gomes's camp appear all but certain to end without an agreement.
