The singer wore the mask at a Los Angeles meet and greet for her new poetry book Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass on Friday 2 October.
However, seemingly large gaps in the covering prompted social media users to question how well it would help prevent the transmission of coronavirus.
Del Rey has now addressed the criticism in response to an article from The Michigan Daily, which was titled: “Lana Del Rey wore a mesh mask. What now?”.
“Great article. The mask had plastic on the inside. They’re commonly sewn in by stylists these days,” Del Rey wrote on Twitter.
“I don’t generally respond to articles because I don’t care. But there ya go. Same goes for everyone’s masks in my video. I’m lucky enough to have a team of people who can do that.”
One user commented on the singer’s reply: “No hate but took you long enough”, prompting Del Rey to write: “Bro I’m working on two albums and excitedly and happily donating a million dollars throughout the nation.”
At the time of the book signing, LA county had asked that everyone wear a cloth face covering when interacting with people outside of their households, in both private and public spaces.
Del Rey's sister, Caroline “Chuck” Grant, who livestreamed the poetry reading on Instagram, said the singer had “tested negative” and was remaining six feet away those in attendance.
However, pictures later posted online showed the star posing side-by-side with her fans.
The images prompted people to criticise Del Rey’s choice of face covering with some calling it “irresponsible”, adding that she was a “danger to herself and others”.
“I cant believe Lana is actually wearing this mask to.....socially interact with people. This is so irresponsible,” one person wrote on Twitter.
Another wrote: “Why is she at an event with a bunch of people wearing a mesh mask??? I love Lana but this is incredibly irresponsible.”
