Mr Wilson also shared some suggestions of where those in need of support for covering their fuel bills this winter could look.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he said: “For anyone struggling with their energy bills this winter, you should check to see if you are eligible for any of the government support schemes such as the Warm Home Discount (WHD) energy rebate scheme, the Winter Fuel [Payment] or Cold Weather Payment.

"You might also be eligible for an energy grant from a charitable trust to help clear your energy debt - so it’s well worth double checking.

"It’s also important to call your supplier and update them of any changes in your circumstances such as redundancies or ill health. They should be able to help you with additional payment plans, and try to negotiate a solution that works for both of you – if you have a plan in place, it is unlikely they will threaten to switch off your energy supply.

"If you’re self-isolating or unwell with coronavirus, your supplier might try to offer you additional support options such as a pre-loaded top up card for pre pay meters or allow a third party to top up for you.
