That comes in addition to being knocked out of the Europa League by Slavia Prague, which will no doubt leave Brendan Rodgers with mixed feelings: little chance of silverware for the season, but more time to rest up between league games and try to secure a top-four finish.

Brighton, meanwhile, remain in 16th position after two wins and two defeats in their last four; they are above Newcastle only on goal difference and just three points above the relegation zone as their goalscoring problems continue to affect their survival chances.
