Liverpool embrace chaos to complete astonishing comeback

“Fail in the most beautiful way,” Jurgen Klopp told his players, in what may be remembered as football management’s most effective piece of reverse psychology. Liverpool would not fail beautifully. It would be mad, bad, brilliant, tempestuous - ugly, sometimes - but they would succeed.

The first came early enough - with Divock Origi pouncing on Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s parry -  and a frantic quarter-of-an-hour followed. It was the type of frenzied 15 minutes which did for Manchester City and Roma last year. Barcelona survived them.

We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

From 15p €0.18 $0.18 USD 0.27 a day, more exclusives, analysis and extras.

And when a tiring home side went back down the tunnel at half time, Ernesto Valverde’s side seemed to have seen off the worst. Without Mohamed Salah to break in behind, without Roberto Firmino linking the play, Liverpool would not come again. Would they?

That was the logical conclusion at the break but under Klopp, Liverpool defy logic. Liverpool are chaos. What other word could describe the two-minute period when substitute Georginio Wijnaldum eradicated Barcelona’s first-leg lead, one goal immediately following the other?

How else do summarise the quick Trent Alexander-Arnold corner that allowed that caught out Barcelona’s defence, allowing Origi to score the goal which takes them back to the Champions League final for the second consecutive season? This team, once again, defies logic and belief.

Origi the hero once more

It was not supposed to be this close without Salah and Firmino to help make up the ground lost at the Nou Camp. “Two of the world’s best strikers are not available,” Klopp conceded on Monday.

But in their place came someone who was close to leaving the club last summer. Instead, he is now close to being remembered as one of the best big-game, big-moment players in its history.

Where would Liverpool be without Origi’s goals over the past few days? The answer is quite simple: without a hope in the Premier League title race and out of the Champions League. Their season would be over.

It would be wrong to boil this night down to one player. This, as ever with Klopp, was a triumph of a system. But you need someone to take the chances that system creates, to be alive on the quick corner.

Against all expectation, Origi has been that man.

Liverpool make it scrappy

What is it about scrawny Scottish full-backs that so annoys the best players in the world? Last year’s Champions League had Neymar refusing to shake hands with Celtic’s Anthony Ralston after the defender had grinned manically in the face.

Now, we have Andrew Robertson shoving Lionel Messi in the back of the head with both palms as early as the second minute. It was a new take on the old concept of a ‘reducer’ but it did the job, setting the tone for an ill-tempered evening.

Robertson was not the only one. There was Fabinho stealing the dead ball away from Luis Suarez on a Barcelona corner, not long before a forceful challenge on the Uruguayan earned him a yellow card.

Even James Milner was falling theatrically and staying down on the ground after one robust aerial challenge. Liverpool, clearly, wanted to upset and disrupt their opponents. They wanted a dogfight. For long spells, they got one.

Anfield turns on Suarez

The thing with dogfights, though, is that you need the bigger dog. Suarez gives no quarter to any opponent. That much, to anybody who witnessed his three-and-a-half years as a Liverpool player should know that. Anybody who watched the first leg should too.

It was no surprise then when the Uruguayan got took retributive action on Robertson, presumably on Messi’s behalf. A sly kick to ankle off-the-ball, once the Liverpool full-back was already hobbling, helped end Robertson’s night early.

As chants of “cheat, cheat, cheat” and “f*** off Suarez” rang out, some cried hypocrisy on social media. They were right, but that misses the point. Anfield, after all, is not so different from Suarez himself.

It is a ground which often welcomes its former players back with open arms but not when the stakes are as a high as a place in a European Cup final. Suarez and Liverpool worked as a match because the two parties cared equally about one thing: winning.

Barcelona haunted by ghosts of Rome

And while you expect Suarez to engage in such tactics and succumb to the fraught energy of the occasion, Barcelona are supposed to be much more composed than this. They are meant to kill games. Nip counter-attacks and comebacks in the bud.

Granted, Valverde’s side are not as possession-heavy as their predecessors but within this team, there are still players who remember how to retain and recycle the ball, slowly frustrating their opponents.

Sometimes that works, sometimes it does not. What was strange was that Barcelona did not even try. Instead they engaged with Liverpool, going toe-to-toe, searching for the away goal that could, in the eyes of many, decide this tie.

Was that a side-effect of their defeat in Rome last year? Messi, certainly, did not seem to think this tie was over when Ousmane Dembele missed that late chance in the first leg.

Valverde has done remarkably well since taking over at the Nou Camp. His work has gone somewhat underappreciated. But - as with the Stadio Olimpico last year - it is this defeat on which their season will be judged. They have fallen short once more.

Liverpool vs Barcelona: 'Disaster' and an 'embarrassment' – Spanish press react to Reds' stunning Champions League comeback https://www.africana55radio.com/liverpool-vs-barcelona-disaster-and-an-embarrassment-spanish-press-react-to-reds-stunning-champions-league-comeback/ https://www.africana55radio.com/liverpool-vs-barcelona-disaster-and-an-embarrassment-spanish-press-react-to-reds-stunning-champions-league-comeback/#respond Wed, 08 May 2019 08:21:54 +0000 http://a8904121

The biggest embarrassment of all time.

That’s how Sport, one of the big two Catalan newspapers, has described Barcelona’s loss at Anfield against Liverpool to crash out of the Champions League.

The Reds stunned the Spanish champions 4-0, a year on from a similar collapse against Roma last season at the Stadio Olimpico.

We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

From 15p €0.18 $0.18 USD 0.27 a day, more exclusives, analysis and extras.

Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo simply caption a picture of Barcelona players looking dejected with: “Blush.”

They add: “A Barcelona without life collapses at Anfield. A ridiculous goal conceded from a corner is an epitaph of this team.”

Inside Mundo Deportivo, they describe the defeat as “worse than Roma,” with back-to-back disastrous defeats to end their Champions League hopes.

Sport add that Barcelona have “written the darkest page in their history” in an “inexcusable way” at Anfield.

The Madrid press were less dejected, naturally, AS going with, “Thunder at Anfield.”

Sport react to Liverpool beating Barcelona

While Marca describe the loss as a “historic disaster.”

Elsewhere in Europe, the Italian press seem to have enjoyed the thriller at Anfield, with Corriere dello Sport’s headline: “Liverpboom!”

Tuttosport label Jurgen Klopp’s side as “a legendary Liverpool.”

L’Equipe, in France, run with: “Crazy Reds,” while Portugal’s A Bola concur with many English papers: “The miracle of Anfield.”

O Jogo describe it as “phenomenal.”

Liverpool vs Barcelona: Jose Mourinho lauds Jurgen Klopp for 'heart, soul and fantastic empathy' to inspire Champions League classic https://www.africana55radio.com/liverpool-vs-barcelona-jose-mourinho-lauds-jurgen-klopp-for-heart-soul-and-fantastic-empathy-to-inspire-champions-league-classic/ https://www.africana55radio.com/liverpool-vs-barcelona-jose-mourinho-lauds-jurgen-klopp-for-heart-soul-and-fantastic-empathy-to-inspire-champions-league-classic/#respond Wed, 08 May 2019 08:19:46 +0000 http://a8904066

Jose Mourinho has heaped praise on Jurgen Klopp for inspiring Liverpool's stunning Champions League comeback against Barcelona.

The Reds rallied from 3-0 down from the first leg to shock the Spanish champions with a thrilling 4-0 win at Anfield to make their second straight European final.

And the former Manchester United boss put aside his previous rivalry with the German, raving about his impact on the Reds.

We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

From 15p €0.18 $0.18 USD 0.27 a day, more exclusives, analysis and extras.

"For me, this has one name -- Jurgen," Mourinho, who led Porto and Inter Milan to the Champions League title, told beIN Sports.

"This is about him. This is a reflection of his personality -- don't give up -- his fighting spirit, every player giving everything.

"He's not crying because he's missing (injured) players, he's not crying because they're playing 50 or 60 matches a season... Today is about Jurgen's mentality.

"This is not about tactics, not about philosophy. This is about heart and soul and fantastic empathy he has created with that group of players."

Liverpool risked finishing the season without a trophy with Manchester City leading the Premier League title race with one game to go and Barcelona heavy favourites to advance to the final after a commanding win at the Nou Camp.

But the thrilling victory over the Spanish champions gave the Merseyside club a chance of winning a sixth European Cup when they face either Tottenham Hotspur or Ajax Amsterdam in the final on June 1.

Jurgen Klopp looks on in delight (REUTERS)

Klopp's side were only the third team in the history of Europe's top club competition to come from three goals down after the first leg of a semi-final and progress, matching Panathinaikos in 1970-71 and Barcelona in 1985-86.

"I didn't expect (this result)," Mourinho, who also coached Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United, added. "I said if it's possible, Anfield is one of the places to make it possible.

Klopp joins his players to celebrate (Getty)

"They were at risk of finishing a fantastic season with nothing to celebrate and now they are one step away from being European champions."

Liverpool vs Barcelona: Jurgen Klopp promises Reds will avenge defeat in last year's Champions League final https://www.africana55radio.com/liverpool-vs-barcelona-jurgen-klopp-promises-reds-will-avenge-defeat-in-last-years-champions-league-final/ https://www.africana55radio.com/liverpool-vs-barcelona-jurgen-klopp-promises-reds-will-avenge-defeat-in-last-years-champions-league-final/#respond Wed, 08 May 2019 08:19:44 +0000 http://a8903921

A year ago in Kiev, Liverpool gathered in the dressing room after losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid and made a resolution: this would not stand.

They would return in 12 months’ time and put things right. Now, after one of the most stunning victories in the club’s history, a 4-0 defeat of Barcelona at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp said it was time to write a new chapter in their history.

“Last year, we really felt we had to go back,” Klopp said. “After Kiev, we had to go back. We couldn’t let it stand like this. That’s not possible. And now we get another chance, and we will go for that of course. I know what people say about me losing finals and stuff. But it's a fourth final we’re in [since he joined the club], and that's pretty special.”

Klopp described the win over Barcelona as a night he would never forget, and the reaction of his players in the dressing room suggested that neither would they.

“The tears in their eyes,” he said. “This club touches you like crazy. You feel much more than others in these moments. I’m not sure if it will happen again, it’s so special.”

The weight of a 3-0 deficit from the first leg left Liverpool as clear outsiders to progress. But Klopp said: “I said to the boys, I think it’s impossible. But because of you, we have a chance. We believed in this chance. They have the mentality of giants, it’s unbelievable.”

Klopp rejected comparisons with Liverpool’s comeback win in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul. “The boys want to create our own history,” he said.

“Not because we’re not happy about the history of the club, but because we need new chapters.” On June 1 at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, his side will have the perfect opportunity to write the next page.

The statement claims there is “overwhelming” evidence of corrupt intent to block the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“Each of us believes that the conduct of President Trump described in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report would, in the case of any other person not covered by the Office of Legal Counsel policy against indicting a sitting President, result in multiple felony charges for obstruction of justice,” the statement reads.

US senator Richard Blumenthal said he was “proud” to add his name to the list of signatures, which includes officials who worked for both Democratic and Republican administrations stretching back to Dwight Eisenhower.

He was joined by Bill Weld, a former US attorney who is standing against Mr Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, and Donald Ayer, a former deputy attorney general under George HW Bush.

Mr Weld said the evidence “goes well beyond what is required to support criminal charges of obstruction of justice.”

The letter was drawn up in response to Attorney General William Barr’s conclusion that the evidence was insufficient for a charge of obstruction of justice.

It argues there is evidence that Mr Trump attempted to fire Mr Mueller, limit the scope of the investigation and prevent witnesses from cooperating with investigators.

“To look at these facts and say that a prosecutor could not probably sustain a conviction for obstruction of justice – the standard set out in Principles of Federal Prosecution  –  runs counter to logic and our experience,” the letter says.

It came as members of the House Judiciary Committee announced plans to vote on Wednesday on whether to hold Mr Barr in contempt of Congress for failing to meet a deadline to provide a copy of the full, unredacted report and its underlying evidence.

Liverpool vs Barcelona: Andy Robertson calls for 'perfection' in Champions League semi-final second leg https://www.africana55radio.com/liverpool-vs-barcelona-andy-robertson-calls-for-perfection-in-champions-league-semi-final-second-leg/ https://www.africana55radio.com/liverpool-vs-barcelona-andy-robertson-calls-for-perfection-in-champions-league-semi-final-second-leg/#respond Tue, 07 May 2019 12:17:30 +0000 http://a8902916

Andy Robertson believes Liverpool have produce the perfect game if they are to turn around their Champions League semi-final tie against Barcelona.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg in the Nou Camp, Jurgen Klopp's side cannot realistically afford to concede an away goal as that would require them to score a near-impossible five times.

Nevertheless, full-back Robertson stressed they were far from ready to give up without taking the fight to their opponents and results this season, the latest a late win at Newcastle, have proved this team never knows when they are beaten.

We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

"We need a perfect game with a bit of luck because I think they will be thinking if they get a goal it kills the tie," said the Scotland captain.

"We always believe but 3-0 against Barcelona is a bit different to scoring a late goal because you are starting three goals behind.

"We will fight for everything, we won't give up and that's all we can do.

"It will be a hell of a task but there is still hope and where there is hope there is still a way in.

"Special things happen at Anfield and we're hoping for another special night. We'll give 100 per cent but we need a bit of luck as well."

Anfield is famous for its European nights and Robertson is hoping for another boost from fans.

"It gives us a lift and it certainly has affected teams in the past," he added.

"Barca are a different kettle of fish, I'm not sure it will affect them, but you saw last season it affected City when we beat them 3-0 (in their Champions League quarter-final), it affected Roma (who lost 5-2).

"Our home games have been really good so hopefully our fans will be at 100 per cent and hopefully we will be at 100 per cent as well and we can react off that."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has argued Republican Senator Rick Scott would be branded “crazy” and “unlikeable” if he was a woman but sexist double-standards means his failings are accepted and normalised.

Mr Scott, the former Florida governor, started the Twitter spat by criticising an exhaustive plan to deal with the nation’s gun violence crisis released by presidential Democrat candidate Senator Cory Booker on Monday.

The 14-part plan proposes a ban on assault weapons, targets the National Rifle Association’s tax-exempt status and would set a federal standard for issuing gun licenses - which includes the completion of a gun safety course.

“The latest terrible idea to come out of the Democrats’ 2020 primary is a federal gun registry,” Mr Scott tweeted.

Mr Scott both mocked the New Jersey senator’s plan which has been called “the most sweeping plan ever put forth by a presidential candidate” by Mr Booker’s campaign and derided Ms Ocasio-Cortez’ Green New Deal resolution.

The Green New Deal is an ambitious environmental plan - unveiled by Ms Ocasio-Cortez - to tackle climate change that would bring in sweeping reforms with the promise of radically reducing American carbon emissions while adding millions of jobs and investing heavily in US infrastructure.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez, who represents New York’s 14th congressional district and is the youngest ever US congresswoman, hit back at his comments by arguing that they lacked “critical thinking".

“If you were a female candidate, maybe you’d be called ‘unlikeable,’ ‘crazy,’ or ‘uninformed’. But since you’re not, this inadequacy is accepted as normal,” she tweeted.

Mr Scott responded by claiming that he had been joking in his previous tweet and went on to fiercely criticise Ms Ocacio-Cortez, who thrashed Democrat stalwart Joe Crowley – the 10-term representative and then-fourth-ranking Democrat in the House, last year.

“That a sitting Congresswoman doesn’t understand sarcasm would be embarrassing to the institution if you hadn’t embarrassed yours to the point of irrelevance already. America rejects socialism and will continue to," he wrote.

Mr Scott entered politics from the business world - having accumulated a personal fortune as a healthcare executive.

James Haskell retires: Northampton and England flanker sees Rugby World Cup dream end after announcing retirement https://www.africana55radio.com/james-haskell-retires-northampton-and-england-flanker-sees-rugby-world-cup-dream-end-after-announcing-retirement/ https://www.africana55radio.com/james-haskell-retires-northampton-and-england-flanker-sees-rugby-world-cup-dream-end-after-announcing-retirement/#respond Tue, 07 May 2019 12:15:30 +0000 http://a8902801

Haskell joined Northampton from Wasps last summer in an effort to remain in Eddie Jones’s England squad and make the 31-man squad that will travel to Japan in September, but has suffered an injury-ravaged campaign that has resulted in the 34-year-old missing more games than he has played.

The British and Irish Lions tourist has revealed that the decision to hang up the boots this month comes with regrets, having not experienced the feeling of winning the World Cup or having the honour of pulling on the famous Barbarians jersey.

“Retiring is obviously a really difficult decision for me to make; professional rugby has been the centre of my life for such a long time now and while it’s weird to imagine living without it, I look to the future with huge excitement,” Haskell said.

“I look back at my career and have been very lucky to have done most things there are to do in rugby. Sadly, I will never know what it’s like to win a World Cup or represent the Barbarians.”

2/24 15. Liam Williams (Wales)

Has claims for the player of the tournament award after a brilliant two months. Shone in the absence of Leigh Halfpenny and handled the England kicking game with ease in Cardiff. Should have scored against France but offered so much more than tries to Wales’ Grand Slam cause and is among the very best aerial footballers.

AFP/Getty Images

3/24 14. Josh Adams (Wales)

Early in his international career but has given Warren Gatland a serious selection headache if and when Halfpenny returns, as Adams deserves to be in the starting XV on this form. Tries in three consecutive matches against Italy, England and Scotland, including a moment against the Red Rose that will live long in the memory.

PA

4/24 13. Henry Slade (England)

A breakthrough tournament for the versatile centre who finally looks to have found his place in the No 13 shirt. Glides across the field with the ball in hand and his two tries against Ireland helped England banish their Dublin hoodoo. One of the most naturally gifted players of his generation.

Getty Images

5/24 12. Hadleigh Parkes (Wales)

Has slotted in seamlessly into the Welsh midfield and saved his biggest impact for the Grand Slam-clinching finale – not just by scoring the first try immediately but also for his try-saving recovery tackle on Ireland’s Jacob Stockdale. Manu Tuilagi certainly impressed with five consecutive appearances and a demolition job on France and Italy, but he could not match Parkes’ defensive reliability.

6/24 11. Jonny May (England)

The tournament’s top scorer brings fans to their feet whenever he receives the ball in space. Only failed to score a try in one of his five matches and bagged rapid 29-minute hat-trick against France. His relationship with Elliot Daly has been a joy to watch.

AP

7/24 10. Finn Russell (Scotland)

Alongside Beauden Barrett as the most potent attacking threats at 10 in the world. The way he brought Scotland back into the match against England was breath-taking to watch, and he also impressed in the defeat against Wales. Missed the game against France with concussion, but you can see why Racing 92 offered him the chance to make it big in the Top 14.

Action Images via Reuters

8/24 9. Ben Youngs (England)

The most consistent option at 9 as he became England’s most-capped scrum-half with his 85th appearance on the final weekend. Significantly improved his kicking game for the tournament and will head to the World Cup as the unrivalled No 1.

Getty Images

9/24 1. Rob Evans (Wales)

Decimated Tadhg Furlong on the scrum as Wales worked out the Irish pack at the set-piece, and he stood up brilliantly in his other big tests against Kyle Sinckler and WP Nel. Mako Vunipola had early claims to the spot but only played one-and-a-half games, whereas Evans is in the most sustained form of his career.

PA

10/24 2. Jamie George (England)

Makes playing rugby look enjoyable as he does it with a smile on his face – especially when he bagged his try against Italy. Mr Reliable at the lineout throughout the tournament and probably the most mobile hooker in the Six Nations.

PA

11/24 3. Kyle Sinckler (England)

Took a lot of unfair criticism following the Wales defeat and continues to serve an education that will do him only good moving beyond this championship. Looks for work in the back line and possesses the handling ability to warrant his roaming role.

Getty Images

12/24 4. George Kruis (England)

Really stepped up his game in the absence of Maro Itoje and Courtney Lawes and deserves a lot of plaudits for how he ran the lineout in Dublin. Scored a try as well as set one up for Brad Shields with charge-downs against Italy and can be proud of what he offered the tournament.

Action Images via Reuters

13/24 5. Alun Wyn Jones (Wales)

A leader by example and the undoubted man of the series. Knew exactly how to get into England and put them under pressure in ways they couldn’t cope, and his sheer defiance to let what looked a bad knee injury forced him off against Ireland was inspiring. Deserved to lift the trophy off a Grand Slam, and he revelled in the moment when it finally came.

AP

14/24 6. Josh Navidi (Wales)

If Jones was the player of the series, then Navidi was the breakthrough star of the campaign. Looked at home in the No 6 shirt despite his preference to be on the openside and even got a run out at No 8 against Italy, ensuring he was one of few players to play in every match. His work-rate around the breakdown and in defence was extraordinary.

Action Images via Reuters

15/24 7. Tom Curry (England)

Looks like the answer to England’s openside flanker search, and at just 20 years old, he could well be a long-term option at that. Picked up the first two tries of his international career against Wales and Scotland, and it was that display in a losing effort in Cardiff that really stood out.

AFP/Getty Images

16/24 8. Billy Vunipola (England)

By no means did he set the world on fire, but he was the outstanding No 8 of the championship by quite some distance. Having missed the bulk of the last two tournaments with injury, it was a welcome sight to see the powerhouse back-row out there.

Getty Images

17/24 16. Ken Owens (Wales)

Brilliant in the loose and would have challenged for the starting shirt if his lineout didn’t falter too often.

Getty Images

18/24 17. Mako Vunipola (England)

Could have been the player of the Six Nations had his tournament not ended in the second round.

REUTERS

19/24 18. Tomas Francis (Wales)

Has well and truly usurped Samson Lee as Wales’ first-choice tighthead prop and enjoyed a very impressive campaign.

REUTERS

20/24 19. Cory Hill (Wales)

Injury cruelly ended his participation after the halfway stage, but his impact in the victory over England cannot be ignored.

Getty Images

21/24 20. Justin Tipuric (Wales)

Unlucky to miss out on the starting back-row and was at his disruptive best to plot the English downfall in Cardiff.

AFP/Getty Images

22/24 21. Antoine Dupont (France)

Brought life to a dying French side and looks like a real player to watch for the future.

Getty Images

23/24 22. Gareth Anscombe (Wales)

Answered his critics in style after Warren Gatland put his faith in him. Twenty-point haul as Wales secured the Slam was the perfect reward.

Getty Images

24/24 23. Manu Tuilagi (England)

How delightful was it to see him back in the England shirt and running at full tilt? Two tries against Italy and a destructive display in Dublin were reminders of why England have missed him so much.

Haskell returned from a two-month toe injury lay-off at the start of April in an effort to force his way back into the international fold, but he has also suffered badly from ankle setbacks this season and in his absence the likes of Tom Curry, Sam Underhill and Mark Wilson have all usurped him in the England back-row pecking order.

He will end his career with 77 caps to his name and two World Cups in 2011 and 2015, while he was part of the Lions squad that drew with New Zealand two years ago. Haskell was a key figure in the 2016 Six Nations Grand Slam and 2017 championship retention, adding to the 2011 success in which he started every match under Martin Johnson.

At club level, Haskell is one of the England’s most well-travelled internationals after taking five seasons to gain experience abroad with France’s Stade Francais, Japan’s Ricoh Black Rams and New Zealand Super Rugby side the Highlanders, before returning to childhood club Wasps where he made more than 200 appearances.

“I have loved every minute of my career in rugby and feel very privileged to have played with and against some exceptional players,” Haskell added.

“There are so many people to thank, but in particular I would like to express my appreciation for all the coaches, trainers and physios who I have worked with throughout my career – from Maidenhead minis all the way up to England and the British & Irish Lions, I owe them all a huge debt of gratitude.

“I also want to thank all my team mates over the years for putting up with me and giving me an adventure that allowed me to laugh every single day.

“My thanks go out to the supporters here at Northampton Saints too who have welcomed me with open arms; I wish I’d been able to offer more on the field this season. This next chapter was supposed to go a very different way, however that is the nature of professional sport. I’ve never spent so much time injured in my entire career, but I’m doing everything I can to help the squad here until my contract ends.

“Finally, I would not have achieved what I have in this sport without the continued support of my amazing wife, my family, and my friends. To them all, I am incredibly grateful.”

Haskell made more than 200 appearances for Wasps before joining Northampton Saints (Reuters)

His international revival under Jones saw him become a key figure in England’s recent Six Nations success, and the Australian became one of Haskell’s biggest fans as he starred as man of the series in the 2017 series whitewash of the Wallabies.

“When I look back at my time coaching James, it will always bring a smile to my face,” Jones said. “It was a privilege to coach him, but also great fun. He’s what I’d describe as a ‘glue’ player – someone who always tries to bring a squad together.

“His tour to Australia in 2016 sticks in my mind. He was absolutely outstanding on that tour, amazingly physical, uncompromising and just totally dominant. Despite injuries preventing him from achieving his goals this season, he should be remembered for a great career and as someone who never gave less than 100 per cent for club and country.

Eddie Jones paid tribute to Haskell as 'one of the great characters of the sport' (Getty)

“Not only a superb player, but also one of the game’s great characters; rugby will be poorer without the ‘old fella’.”

Haskell is expected to remain in the public eye after already moving into media, having worked with Sky for their international rugby coverage this season and launching his own podcast, the House of Rugby, with www.joe.co.uk.

Around 30 ravers at a French music festival have been treated for hypothermia after they were hit by an unexpected snow storm.

Rescuers were forced to hand out hundreds of survival blankets when temperatures plummeted to -3C overnight on Saturday and Sunday at Teknival 2019, an unauthorised rave held on a military-owned hilltop in central France.

Up to 10,000 people attended the event over the weekend, but by Monday morning only 500-600 “diehards" remained, according to Le Parisien

While many festival-goers were treated at the scene in a heated tent set up by organisers, two people were taken to hospital.

More than 100 police officers made a number of seizures of drugs, including cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine, the newspaper reported.

The annual music festival, part of a network of free parties which take place worldwide, is held every year in France at a secret location, which is only revealed shortly before it is due to begin.

Last year conservation groups accused the festival’s organisers of disturbing local wildlife after thousands gathered at another military base in the north of the country.

Liverpool welcome Barcelona to Anfield for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final.

The Reds find themselves three goals behind after some magic from Lionel Messi put Barca in control of the tie a week ago.

Jurgen Klopp's side have it all to do and will have to do it without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino who both miss out through injury.

We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

From 15p €0.18 $0.18 USD 0.27 a day, more exclusives, analysis and extras.

They will give it their all, however, with a remarkable turnaround not completely out of the question against a side who gave up a three-goal lead in the quarter-finals a year ago.

Here's everything you need to know:

Team news

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino will be missing through injury with youngster Rhian Brewster likely to deputise from the bench.

Virgil van Dijk trained separately in the run-up to the game but is expected to be fit.

Manager Ernesto Valverde rested his entire starting XI for the La Liga game with Celta Vigo at the weekend in preparation for this game.

However, Ousmane Dembele picked up a hamstring injury and did not travel to Merseyside and may now be out for the remainder of the season.

Predicted line-ups

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum, Mane, Sturridge

Barcelona: Ter Stegen, Roberto, Pique, Lenglet, Alba, busquets, Rakitic, Vidal, Messi, Suarez, Coutinho

What time is it and how can I watch it?

The game kicks off at 8pm at Anfield. The match will be broadcast on BT Sport 2 and BT Sport 4K UHD.

Subscribers can also stream the clash online via the BT Sport website.

Prediction

Liverpool have it all to do but regardless of how it ends a fast start is a must. They could've done without the absences of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino though with Sadio Mane the only one of the trio available to Jurgen Klopp tonight.

The Reds did all they could before being undone by Lionel Messi a week ago so won't be overawed by the task at hand here. Expect them to get on the ball early and try and push Barca back as they did for long periods at the Nou Camp.

The Gini Wijnaldum false nine experiment didn't go as planned in the first leg but Klopp should still pack his midfield to try and get a foothold this time around. Get that early goal and you never know, Barca could be rattled.

That said, this Barca team does seem different to the one that fell apart in Rome a year ago and are to a man fully focused on regaining this title.

If they get a goal it's tie over and with Messi, Luis Suarez and more in their ranks it'd be a surprise if they didn't get one. 2-1, home win. Barca progress on aggregate.
