Queen's Baton reaches Birmingham on eve of Commonwealth Games

The 2022 Commonwealth Games is underway after the opening ceremony took place last night to kick off 10 days of intense sporting action. Celebrities and musicians welcomed the athletes from across the Commonwealth in a three hour long performance that showcased the best and brightest from the West Midlands. More than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations and territories will compete in the games with 280 medals available to be won.

16 of those are on offer on day one as gymnastics, triathalon and netball all get underway on Friday. Olympic silver medallist Alex Yee made it gold in the men’s triathlon for the first medal of the Games for Team England. Fellow Tokyo hero Georgia Taylor-Brown took silver in the women’s race. Later, in the velodrome, Laura Kenny helped England to team pursuit bronze alongside Josie Knight, Maddie Leech and Sophie Lewis before Australia took gold. Team England would have two further chances for gold but had to settle for silver after being beaten by New Zealand and then Australia in the men’s team pursuit and men’s team sprint finals respectively.

Later, the English team of Joe Fraser, James Hall, Courtney Tulloch Jake Jarman and Giarnni Regini-Moran delivered a dominant gold medal in the artistic gymnastics team final. The action will then move to the pool where the first of the swimming medals are decided later this evening. Women’s T20 cricket also made its Commonwealth debut in Birmingham earlier with a huge match as Australia squeezed past India at Edgbaston while England beat Trinidad and Tobago to kick off their netball defence.

But Australia respond in style! It’s gold for the world record holders and they put quite the distance between themselves and England, who take second.

Canada are third despite a huge effort from Wales, who fell away towards the end.

Now this should be good. Can England take Australia down in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay? A team including Tom Dean and Anna Hopkin will face the world record holders Australia, with Scotland, Canada and Wales in the mix too.

Dean gets England to the 200m ahead of Australia! Long way to go...

What a brilliant race in the men’s 200m breaststroke final! Australia’s Olympic champion and world record holder Zac Stubblety-Cook takes gold after a huge kick down the stretch, but he was put under significant pressure by England’s James Wilby who takes a brilliant silver!

And what about the winner of the bronze! Eight years after winning gold in Glasgow, Ross Murdoch has come back from nowhere to get on the podium again! He can’t believe it.

And there’s the gold! A simply dominant performance from England is sealed by Jake Jarman, who along with Joe Fraser, James Hall, Giarnni Regini-Moran and Courtney Tulloch have been so superior and will also fancy their chances of further individual success in Birmingham.

Canada come second and Cyprus do indeed get the finish on the podium they have been threatening all evening. What a result for them, but rather helped by Australia going all out for silver and making some mistakes down the stretch.

    2) Canada - 241.200

Joe Fraser! He almost takes the roof off the arena after a brilliant high bar routine, almost certainly good enough to get him a place in the final.

Fraser had have his appendix removed just five weeks ago and then his preparations were further hit by a foot injury two weeks ago.

But he has taken his place amongst the England team and the gold medal which is about to arrive will surely not be his last in Birmingham...

    Fraser gets a 14.500

He’s crushed it and is into all four finals he has entered in Birmingham.

Team England are closing in on their second gold medal of the Commonwealth Games after what has been a dominant performance in the artistic gymnastics.

England just have the horizontal bars to go while Cyprus, New Zealand and Scotland scrap it out for the other medals.

Alex Yee savours Commonwealth Games gold as ‘greatest achievement’ despite confusing finish

Alex Yee revealed his Commonwealth Games gold was the best moment of his career to date but admitted the controversial finish to the men’s triathlon was “a shame”.

Sutton Park played host as Olympic silver medallist Yee made up 15 seconds on the run to catch and eclipse his great rival and world No.1 Hayden Wilde, giving Team England a golden hello on the opening day of action in Birmingham.

However, the New Zealander could still be upgraded to gold alongside Yee with an appeal pending after he served a controversial 10-second penalty for unclipping his helmet before racking his bike which deprived fans of a scintillating sprint finish.

A historic moment for Northern Ireland! Barry McClements’s third place finish in the Men’s 100m Backstroke S9 category is Northern Ireland’s first medal in the pool at the Commonwealth Games. Brilliant achievement.

    Commonwealth Games 2022 - Cycling

England para-cyclist Sophie Unwin was left in tears after being told she would not get a bronze medal for finishing third in the women’s tandem B sprint at the Commonwealth Games.

Unwin, piloted by Georgia Holt, beat Scotland’s former Paralympic runner Libby Clegg, piloted by Jenny Holl, for third place in the event and initial results showed the 28-year-old had won bronze.

Five teams had originally entered the event but only four took to the start, which meant that under competition rules only the gold and silver medals would be awarded.

However, it appears that was not properly communicated, with big screens in the velodrome advertising Unwin’s ride against Clegg as a bronze medal race, and Unwin appearing on the Commonwealth Games website as a bronze medal winner following the win.

Unwin and Holt – who won Paralympic road race silver and individual pursuit bronze in Tokyo and also have a world title – were told to cut short their post-race interviews in order to go to the podium, but then emerged in tears after finding out they were not eligible to receive a medal.

England continue to set a furious pace at the front of the artistic gymnastics standings as Giarnni Regini-Moran flips and spins and lands a stunning 15.000 on the vault.

England have stretched their lead at the top to almost four points. Onto the parallel bars next.
