'It will be taken apart': Creator of Birmingham bull reveals what will happen after Commonwealth Games

The 2022 Commonwealth Games is underway after a memorable opening day of action in Birmingham. Day two is set to be even bigger, with 23 gold medals on offer and a schedule highlighted by Adam Peaty returning to the pool and England going for gold in the gymnastics women’s team final. The men, led by the inspired Joe Fraser, delivered a dominant gold medal in the team final on Friday night with today’s hopes being carried by the likes of Claudia Fragapane and Alice Kinsella. England won two gold medals on the opening day, with Alex Yee claiming the first for Team England in Birmingham despite a confusing finish.

The men’s and women’s marathons kicked off the schedule on Saturday - as Victor Kiplangat and Jessica Stenson took gold, while England’s Johnboy Smith took advantage of a David Weir puncture in the men’s wheelchair marathon - before the second day of track cycling gets underway in the velodrome. Laura Kenny helped England to team pursuit bronze alongside Josie Knight, Maddie Leech and Sophie Lewis yesterday while today, Jack Carlin takes on Australia’s Matthew Glaetzer in the pursuit of gold.

There are also set to be intense rivalries in the pool, with England’s Tom Dean going up against Scotland’s Duncan Scott for the first of potentially six times at this year’s Commonwealth Games.

Elsewhere, England begin their T20 cricket campaign against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston while the rugby sevens heats up with the quarter-finals and semi-finals later this evening after the group stage was completed this morning. Follow all the latest updates from the Commonwealth Games below:

It’s an incredibly close race that basically all comes down to the touch and South Africa’s Pieter Coetze is able to take gold in 53.78s, 013s ahead of England’s Williams.

England seal victory in their women’s T20 cricket opener at Edgbaston. Having restricted Sri Lanka to 106-9, they had a couple of scares but ultimately cruised to a five-wicket win with 17 balls to spare.

Alice Capsey top-scored with 44 from 45 balls before being dismissed with just two runs required as Maia Bouchier (21no) saw them over the line. Job done for the hosts

It’s a big ask for Duncan Scott as he’s straight back into the pool after his 200m freestyle gold, competing in the punishing 400m individual medley.

A great effort as he takes BRONZE, finishing behind New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt who takes gold in a Commonwealth Games record time, while Australia’s Brendon Smith wins silver.

Not to be for Scotland in the men’s rugby sevens quarter-finals as they get thumped 34-7by an unstoppable Fiji team. The other QFs in the men’s competition are coming up shortly.

Meanwhile, in the women’s semi-finals, Australia edged New Zealand 17-12 and Fiji beat Canada 24-7 meaning it will be an Australia vs Fiji final tomorrow - not to be missed that one.

Sri Lanka 106-9 (20 overs) vs England 77-4 (12 overs)

An update from Edgbaston where Sri Lanka have actually made a pretty good fist of defending 107 against England. They reduced England to 63-4 with some economical bowling but the hosts still have plenty of ball remaining and wickets in hand.

They’re at 77-4 now, with Alice Capsey (31no) and Maia Bouchier (2no) at the crease. 30 more needed from 8 overs.

A couple of medal updates from the events we weren’t focusing on at the swimming.

In the men’s 50m freestyle S13 final - a category for visually impaired athletes - Scotland’s Stephen Clegg took SILVER and was agonisingly close to gold, touching the wall just one-hundredth of a second behind Nicolas Turbide of Canada.

There was further home success in the women’s 50m freestyle S13 as England’s Hannah Russell also took SILVER as Katja Dedekind of Australia won gold.

Dominant from Adam Peaty! Foot injury? What foot injury?

The greatest breaststroke swimmer of all time cruises into the 100m breaststroke final as he crushes the field with a time of 59.02s, almost a full second quicker than his time in the heats this morning.

No-one in either semi-final even got close to that time and he’ll gun for another gold in the final tomorrow.

Ok, here we go. They took a one-two for Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games but now Tom Dean and Duncan Scott are on opposing teams for this 200m freestyle final.

The Englishman and the Scot are great friends but they’ll do battle in one of the most anticipated swimming races of the entire Commonwealth Games.

There are other swimmers from the home nations in this final as well - including Joe Litchfield, Max Litchfield and Calum Jarvis. PLus a couple of Aussies in the form of Elijah Winnington and Mack Horton aiming to spoil the party. Box office!
