Commonwealth games: Prince Charles drives Aston Martin in opening ceremony

The 2022 Commonwealth Games begin in Birmingham tonight with the opening ceremony at the redeveloped Alexander Stadium, which will play host to athletics when it starts next week.

Just over 10 years on from the memorable opening ceremony to the London Olympics, the creative team behind the show are expected to highlight the talent and diversity of the West Midlands in a performance that will be around three hours long. At its heart will be the Parade of Nations, as participating athletes from countries across the Commonwealth walk into the stadium under their flag. Diver Jack Laugher and weightlifter Emily Campbell have been chosen as the flag bearers for the host nation, England.

More than 5,000 athletes will compete across 20 different sports for 280 gold medals over the next 10 days. These Games will be the first global multi-sport event to have more women’s medals than men’s, and will see the biggest integrated programme of para-sport yet.

    African nations finish parade

Lovely stuff from Zambia. A kaleidoscopic black, green, red and orange look really catches the eye.

And that rounds out the African nations. On to the Americas now, who are coming into UB40... Sure.

    Parade of nations continuing

Here’s a few of the different looks we’ve seen so far. Aussies not bringing much to the party, for me. Muted khaki not doing it for me

    Cameroon with the best look?

My personal favourite look so far is probably Cameroon. They looked great.

    African nations continue

Hmmm, not sure on Lesotho’s look. Nice straw hats but the plain-ish black polos and beige shorts are a bit dull.

Cracking trousers from Mozambique! Think Ian Poulter golf trousers - very loud... Nigeria pretty understated, mostly white with some green.

    First African nations parading

Yes! Some great looks among the African nations. Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) looking great in blue and red. The Gambian turquoise, all-in-one jumpsuits are less good...

The Cameroonian athletes look great - a beautifully traditional African look, absolutely superb.

Ghana also bring a lot of colour and energy. Kenya more understated, although they do get a video message from athletics legend Eliud Kipchoge.

    Oceania complete

Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu (rocking a great green and blue look) and Vanuatu - which was judged as the second-happiest nation in the world - continue the parade of Oceanian nations.

Papua New Guinea had some great, Karate Kid-esque, headbands by the way.

Ok, that’s Oceania done, as we’ve taken a break from the parade to go to Shazia Mirza shouting about how she loves Birmingham and cracks a couple of jokes. It wasn’t great...

Countries of Oceania in the athletes parade

We’re running through a few more of the countries in Oceania now - Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru etc. Islands in the Pacific Ocean essentially.

Each country in slightly different garb. Must admit, I like the blue floral look of Niue and the green thread through the Norfolk Islands’ look.

Lenny Henry comperes ahead of athletes entering

Lenny Henry does a bit of compering - jokes about his brother being out back ready to steal the giant bull, that sort of thing. We’ll start the athletes parade with the Oceanian countries.

Australia first up and it’s their biggest ever team they’ve brought to a Commonwealth Games.

Volunteers dressed in Peaky Blinders garb

The bull is good again. Its armour is ripped off, showing itself to be a beacon of goodness and light. Woohoo!

Ah, here we go - a Peaky Blinders reference as all the volunteers (the game-makers if you will) are dressed in flat caps as they enter the arena. The athletes parade is about to get underway.
