Euro 2022: England will be "ruthless" in front of any opposition, says Chloe Kelly

Follow live updates from England’s final group stage match at Euro 2022 as the Lionesses take on Northern Ireland in Southampton. The Euro 2022 hosts qualified for the quarter-finals in style on Monday thanks to a stunning 8-0 win over Norway, a result that not only underlined England as tournament favourites but also secured their place as group winners. Northern Ireland, meanwhile, are already out after a 1-0 defeat to Austria but will be playing for pride on what is their first appearance at a major international competition.

England and Northern Ireland played each other recently in World Cup qualifying, with the Lionesses winning 4-0 at Wembley and then 5-0 at Windsor Park - just to emphasise the size of the task facing Kenny Shiels’ side. England will be without their manager Sarina Wiegman, however, after she tested positive for Covid-19 before the match. Wiegman had called on England to maintain their momentum ahead of the knockout stages, and so are unlikely to take Northern Ireland lightly ahead of next week’s quarter-finals.

As winners of Group A, England will face either Spain or Denmark next Wednesday, with those teams meeting in a Group B decider tomorrow night at Brentford. Follow live updates from St Mary’s, below:

    England 0-0 Northern Ireland

11 mins: England have firm control of the possession now, and once again the right hand side looks the most threatening avenue. Stanway is picking up a couple of nice positions and tests Burns with a shot towards the near post.

England 0-0 Northern Ireland - NO PENALTY!

8 mins: The right decision. Rafferty’s hands were by her side and the shot from Stanway was from close range. The ball also hit Mead’s hand in the build up.

    England 0-0 Northern Ireland

4 mins: Maybe a slight concern that England made another slow start, even if was unpunished. The Lionesses make their first attack down the right, with goalkeeper Burns punching Bronze’s cross clear.

Euro 2022: England vs Northern Ireland

Time for the anthems, or anthem I should say as we get a single rendition of ‘God Save The Queen’.

There are plenty of Northern Ireland fans at St Mary’s and it sets up a cracking atmosphere ahead of kick-off.

And before the game, Veurink spoke to BBC Sport: “We have confidence in keeping rhythm for players - if you look to the last game and then the quarter-final game it’s a big gap, nine days in between so that’s the reason we’ve kept the same players.

“We were all disappointed [with Wiegman’s positive test] but at the end we all know the world we live in at the moment and we knew it could happen. We spoke a lot about lots of scenarios and this was one of them. But we have to go on, we have to move on and that was also the message from Sarina today to the players and the staff.”

Euro 2022: Arjan Veurink takes charge of England

With Sarina Wiegman out due to Covid-19, her long-time assistant coach Arjan Veurink will take charge of the Lionesses.

Veurink came with Wiegman from the Netherlands national team, in what was a specific request from the Euro 2017 winning manager.

Before then, the 35-year-old won several Dutch titles with FC Twente.

    Euro 2022: Austria vs Norway

There is another match on tonight - and one that will have an actual impact on the tournament - as Austria face Norway in Brighton.

Both teams beat Northern Ireland to get to three points but were also beaten by England. It means both can still qualify for the quarter-finals.

In Norway’s case, they were of course beaten 8-0 by England - so Ada Hegerberg and her team will have to beat Austria to advance.

If they do, it will set up a clash against Germany in the last eight. The Germans are already through as winners of Group B.
