England will launch their campaign to win a first Six Nations title in three years against France as the Rugby World Cup finalists look to put the disappointment of the defeat against South Africa behind them.

Eddie Jones will hope there are no signs of a World Cup hangover on display at the Stade de France against a new-look French side who, with Fabien Galthie now at the helm, have been talked up as potential dark horses for championship glory.

The England head coach has stuck with the bulk of the side that started the World Cup final, although he is forced into changes as both Billy Vunipola and Anthony Watson are ruled out with injury, meaning that Northampton Saints full-back George Furbank is handed his first appearance to become England’s first Six Nations debutant since Jack Nowell and Luther Burrell in 2014’s corresponding fixture.

France meanwhile have gone with an inexperienced yet exciting line-up that boasts just 221 international caps at an average of fewer than 15 per player, showing that for all their desire to win the Six Nations, they already have one eye on France 2023.

Friday’s squad announcement also brought with it the revelation that Mako Vunipola had not been selected by England as he was merely being rested, with Joe Marler starting in the front row and Ellis Genge named as cover, while Charlie Ewels also forced his way into the side at the expense of George Kruis. Here’s everything you need to know for the match.

    Prediction

France 14-20 England: The uncertainty surrounding the start of the championship should help to keep the affair a tight one as each team attempts to work out the other. France will be delighted to see Mako Vunipola rested, though that English arrogance may also fire up Les Bleus to threaten a victory against the odds. But England’s vastly superior experience at this stage should see them hold on.
