Kamala Harris is being praised for a recent fashion choice that many have deemed both inspirational and “relatable”.

On Monday, the Democratic vice presidential nominee arrived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a campaign appearance wearing a laid-back outfit consisting of a navy blazer, skinny jeans, and a black top.

However, it was the senator’s shoes, a pair of low-rise black Converse, that captured attention.

“Laced up and ready to win,” Ms Harris captioned an Instagram clip of her disembarking a plane in the iconic sneakers.

Although this is not the first time Ms Harris has worn Converse while campaigning - she frequently wore them during her own presidential run - her choice to wear the Chuck Taylor All Stars for the recent appearance prompted renewed praise on social media, where the video of her disembarking has been viewed more than 5.5m times.

The viral reaction, which saw Chuck Taylors trending for hours, wasn’t just about Ms Harris prioritising comfort, however, as many viewed the outfit as part of a bigger statement about outdated gender ideals and the expectations of female politicians.

“This is minuscule in the grand scheme of things, but seeing @KamalaHarris campaign in Converse makes me smile,” one person tweeted. “Women were not allowed to wear pants on the Senate floor until 1993. We’re taught to push through the pain of wearing heels.

“Now our VP candidate is rocking sneakers.”

Another said: “I think seeing Kamala wear Converse is exciting because she’s wearing what she wants to wear instead of what she’s expected to wear. She’s wearing shoes that are comfortable and reflect her personality.

“It’s just really cool to see this in a Veep candidate. It really is.”

Someone else wrote: “I'm giddy over her sneakers. No more pumps, no high heels. There's so much power you're denied when you're forced to wear disabling shoes. She's endorsing a revolution, and I am signing up.”

Others urged Converse to collaborate on a line of sneakers with the vice presidential nominee.

“So @Converse eventually we’re gonna see a Kamala edition right?” one person tweeted, while another person wrote: “So when are we getting that Kamala Harris collection @Converse?”

While a Harris-inspired Converse collaboration hasn’t been announced yet, it seems likely that the politician will continue to wear the sneakers on the campaign trail, as she previously revealed she has numerous pairs.

“I run through airports in my Converse sneakers,” she told The Cut in 2018. “I have a whole collection of Chuck Taylors: a black leather pair, a white pair, I have the kind that don’t lace, the kind that do lace, the kind I wear in the hot weather, the kind I wear in the cold weather, and the platform kind for when I’m wearing a pantsuit.”
