Liverpool travel to Leeds United tonight in a game clouded by the news surrounding a breakaway European Super League with the Reds confirmed as one of the 12 founding members.

With Jurgen Klopp’s side in sixth and in a fight for a top four finish, tonight’s game was previously crucial to their hopes for next season, but with the possibility that the club would not even be in the Champions League, the importance is now less clear.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will look to cement what has been a tremendous season on their return to the top flight in England, with three points able to cement their top-half status and take them above Arsenal - another founding member of the Super League - into ninth place.

Klopp actually spoke on the issue surrounding a Super League back in 2019 to Kicker, making clear his disdain for the idea: “I hope there will never be this Super League. With the way the Champions League is now running, football has a really great product. For me, the Champions League is the Super League in which you don’t always have to play the same teams. I also don’t feel like my club has to be seeded. Of course, it’s economically important, but why should we create a system where Liverpool can play against Real Madrid for 10 years in a row? Who wants to see this every year?”

Follow live coverage of the game at Elland Road, plus all the fallout and reaction on the Super League, with Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville on punditry duty for Sky Sports and likely to have strong opinions on the developing story:

    Struggling Reds

This is the first time Liverpool have lost as many as 10 competitive fixtures in a single calendar year before the end of April since 1954. Only two of their 16 Premier League goals in 2021 were scored in the first half, and both of those came in stoppage time after 45 minutes.

    Firing Leeds

Leeds are aiming to win four top-flight games in a row within the same season for the first time since April 2001. No side has scored more Premier League goals from outside the box than the 12 Leeds have this season.

    Back-to-back?

Following their 2-1 win at Manchester City last week, Leeds could become just the second side in Premier League history to beat the league leaders and the reigning champions in consecutive matches, after Everton beat Chelsea and Manchester United in February 2010.

    Up turn in form

Liverpool have won three consecutive league games for just the second time this season. The Reds have won five of their last six away league games, which is more than they had in their previous 15 on the road.

    Leeds send a message

Leeds United have come out onto the pitch for the warm ups wearing shirts saying: “Earn it on the pitch. Football is for the fans.” in protest to the plans. There are also banners in the stands:

    Thoughts from Gary Neville

On Monday Night Football Gary Neville echoed the thoughts of Jamie Carragher in organising the fans to oppose the European Super League plans and he put the blame squarely on the owners of the ‘big six’ especially those of Manchester United and Liverpool football clubs. He said:

I was half hoping they would rethink it because of the backlash.

“I’m enthused by the reaction. But if they get this through – and these owners have pushed difficult things through in the past, they’re steel-like – it’ll change football in this country forever. Forever.

“We have to now mobilise, organise. Everybody’s got to come behind this. Forget allegiances. They’re trying to take football away from us.”

    Head-to-head

There is still a football match to played tonight so here’s a few of the stats:

Leeds have won just one of their last 11 home games against Liverpool in all competitions. They have conceded 52 goals in their 25 Premier League games against the Reds, more than they have versus any other side.

Liverpool are one short of becoming the first club to record 50 top-flight victories against Leeds. The hosts have kept only one clean sheet in their last 21 competitive matches versus Liverpool.

Carragher tells fans to unite to stop the plans

Jamie Carragher gave a passionate speech on Monday Night Football calling on fans across the country to stand up to the plans for a European Super League saying:

I think supporters up and down the country can stop this, and I think at the forefront of this will be Liverpool because I’ve seen it before.

“Football fans: get together, all of us, and stop this. This cannot be allowed to happen.”
