The money-saving expert outlined the big problems the UK is facing from employers regarding the furlough payment scheme. Mr Lewis told the BBC that many companies are not paying their employees when morally they should.

Mr Lewis said: "This is the biggest problem we are facing as a society at the moment, I am trying to get a call to the Chancellor on it.

    "There are two.

"What has happened is the state has made companies the gatekeeper for this new form of welfare, the furlough protection scheme.

"Many companies are not paying what I believe morally they should.

"The first is that they think they are doing something wrong by putting companies on furlough because we have been trained for years that getting welfare is something we want people to jump through the hoops to see if they are qualified otherwise we live in a self-supporting world.

    "That has changed."

He continued: "This new scheme is about trying to give everyone a minimum amount of income, a survival income until we get out of the other side of this and pumping the economy.

"So my big message to employers out there is furlough if you can if somebody can’t work.

    "It is your discretion.

"The state is not saying retrench, it is saying let’s help as many people as possible.

    "You have the moral responsibility.

"The second problem is because the furlough money won’t come until the end of this month companies are having to face their own cash flow issues."

Last week Mr Lewis warned employers ignoring Government-imposed new financial rules could leave vulnerable people at high risk of contracting coronavirus with nowhere to go.

The money-saving expert said: “I got something from someone today who should be self-isolating because they’re in the vulnerable group but they have been told by their employer who could furlough them - because you can furlough people who are 12-weeks self-isolators.

"‘No, I think we’re critical, you come to work or you take unpaid leave.’

“The problem with the financial structure of furloughing which I’m generally very supportive of is that it does rely on the employer’s goodwill and the employer to structure the furlough and it’s the employer who makes decisions on who can or can’t be."
