The Olympics continues on another busy day at Paris 2024 as Simone Biles missed out on history thanks to a dramatic fall off the beam but Keely Hodgkinson is gearing up for her shot at gold on the track.
Biles has enjoyed a sensational Olympics but she faltered for the first time on the final day of the gymnastics. She fell off the balance beam during that apparatus final to miss out on a medal and although she still has the floor exercise final to come, the American icon won’t be able to seal the two golds she needed to share the all-time women’s Olympic record of nine titles.
The action kicked off with the triathlon mixed relay as Great Britain lost their title to Germany after a dramatic sprint finish. Beth Potter carried a lead into the final leg but was caught by Germany’s Laura Lindemann and America’s Taylor Knibb heading into the final straight.
It came down to a photo finish, with Lindemann claiming gold. It was too close to call between Potter and Knibb and although the final standings initially showed Team GB were given silver, the result was changed with the United States winning silver and Great Britain taking bronze.
Later on, attention switches back to athletics and focuses on Hodgkinson’s bid to win the 800m final. The Team GB star is determined to turn silver into gold after a series of near-misses, including in Tokyo three years ago, and set the fastest time in qualifying ahead of tonight’s final.

Olympics 2024: Gymnastics - women’s floor final
A bit of a surprise as Sabrina Maneca-Voinea finishes behind her teammate Ana Barbosu, the young Romanian perhaps slightly harshly marked.
One gymnast left. Can Jordan Chiles deny Rebeca Andrade a second Olympic gold?

But only good enough for second! -0.6 of a penalty for venturing out of bounds is enough to drop Simone Biles beneath Rebeca Andrade by 0.033 - it will not be gold for the great American!

Olympics 2024: Gymnastics - women’s floor final
An exhilarated audience gasp and scream as Simone Biles plays the hits, out of bounds a couple of times to bring about some deductions. The routine is remarkably good, though, and that difficulty score is so high...

Olympics 2024: Gymnastics - women’s floor final
Alice D’Amato steps up with the confidence you would expect of someone newly crowned as an Olympic champion, though the rigours of the balance beam victory and ensuing celebrations a little earlier show slightly in her routine. Still, it’s far from untidy from the Italian, as an execution score of 8.100 shows. A total score of 13.600 is only good enough for third, though...
And you’d expect her to be immediately be dislodged - Simone Biles, for the final time at Paris 2024, is ready to tumble.

Olympics 2024: Gymnastics - women’s floor final
Ana Barbosa dips her toe out of bounds like an anxious paddler, unable to quite stop herself in time. That will prompt a small penalty for the Romanian...though she looks delighted with a 13.700.

Neither Ou Yushan of China nor Japan’s Rina Kishi can get close to Andrade’s mark, though scores of 13 and 13.166 respectively are pleasant enough.

Spectacular! A wonderful way routine from the power-packed Rebeca Andrade, such grand amplitude in her charges to each corner. She sticks the landing of her double back in pike, bringing the routine to an explosive end...and it’s an imposing 14.166 for the Brazilian.

Olympics 2024: Gymnastics - women’s floor final
First on the floor is Manila Esposito, who shows a bit of fatigue, her tumbles not quite tight enough. But she’ll be very pleased with that balance beam bronze earlier, plus that team silver - and the 17-year-old will surely be back for Los Angeles in four years time.
An opening score of 12.133.

Olympics 2024: Gymnastics - women’s floor final
Biles’ difficulty mark in qualifying was 0.6 higher than anyone else could achieve, showing her superiority. You’d say Rebeca Andrade and Jordan Chiles are best placed to get close to her, the second American’s artistry likely to be liked by the judges.

Olympics 2024: Gymnastics - women’s floor final
We’ve already seen Simone Biles get her floor routine spot on once at these Olympics, sealing all-around triumph by finding a level that the rest of the field simply could not get near. The fatigue of a busy week has perhaps shown in a couple of error-strewn finals before this one, though.
