The cash boost will help older Britons make ends meet as energy bills are set to rise again going into the colder months. The one-off payment will be arriving in pensioners’ bank accounts this winter as part of the Winter Fuel Payment.

Most payments will be issued automatically, in November and December, with recipients to get a letter to advise how much they will receive.

The tax-free payment will vary between £150 and £300 depending on a person’s situation.

Those who do not get a letter or the money paid into their account by January 13, 2023, can contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

To be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, a person must have been born on or before September 25, 1956.

They must also have lived in the UK for at least one day during the qualifying week, from September 19 to 25, 2022.

These are the total amounts that a qualifying person will get for their payment this year:

A person who lives alone (or none of the people you live with qualify)

• Born between September 25, 1942 and September 25, 1956: £500
• Born on or before September 25, 1942: £600

A person who lives with someone under 80 who also qualifies

• Born between September 25, 1942 and September 25, 1956: £250
• Born on or before September 25, 1942: £350

A person qualifies and lives with someone (not their partner) who qualifies, and either of them gets one of the benefits

• Born between September 25, 1942 and September 25, 1956: £500 - they will both get the payment
• Born on or before September 25, 1942: £600 - they will both get the payment

A person who lives in a care home and get one of the benefits

• Born between September 25, 1942 and September 25, 1956: Nil
• Born on or before September 25, 1942: Nil.
