Prince William and Prince Harry have reunited and unveiled a statue of their late mother, Princess Diana, at the Sunken Garden in Kensington Palace.

The statue shows the Princess of Wales surrounded by three children, intended to represent the “universality and generational impact” of the princess’s work.

It aims to reflect the warmth, elegance and energy of Diana, as well the impact she had on so many people. The style of the statue, as well as the dress, were inspired by the final period of the princess’s life, as she thrived in the role of ambassador for humanitarian causes.

In front of it is a paving stone engraved with the an extract of the poem The Measure of a Man which featured in Diana’s memorial service.

The statue was sculpted in bronze by Ian Rank Broadley and was cast by Castle Fine Arts Foundry in the traditional “lost-wax” process, with a patina of bluish green over black

Upon the unveiling, the Prince’s released a joint statement that said: “Today, on what would have been our Mother’s 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character – qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better.

“Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and legacy.”

    Diana’s key motherhood moments

Princess Diana was known for regularly breaking tradition when it came to parenting.

She took Prince William with her on her first overseas tour in 1983, despite him being only nine months old at the time.

She also brought both William and Harry with her on a 17-day tour of Italy in 1985, when harry was just seven months old.

William also became the first royal not to receive any homeschooling, as he and Harry both attended the Wetherby School in Notting Hill from the age of five.

Diana was also known to take part in the boys’ sports days being photographed on number of occasions.

My colleague Saman Javed has more on Diana’s key motherhood moments.
