Andy Murray gets Father’s Day surprise after Nottingham victory
Andy Murray’s hopes of securing a seeded ranking for Wimbledon are over after Alex de Minaur ended his winning run in the opening round of Queen’s.
Murray arrived at the tournament where he is a five-time winner in resurgent form following titles at Surbiton and Nottingham but De Minaur proved to be a significant step up in class. The Australian, who is 18th in the world, dominated the match after saving three break points in his opening service game, running away with a 6-3 6-1 victory to extend his career record against Murray to a perfect 4-0.
Murray looked tired arriving at Queen’s on the back of 10 matches in 14 days on the Challenger circuit. The 36-year-old needed to reach the semi-finals in west London in order to be seeded for Wimbledon, and he will now have to hope for a kind draw at the All England Club when the tournament begins in less than two weeks’ time.
Elsewhere, Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune were pushed on their first grass-court matches of the season. Alcaraz had to come from a set down to defeat the lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech while Rune secured his first-ever grass-court win as he saw off Maxime Cressy.
