King hosts garden party with senior royals as Prince Harry to miss reunion

The King, Queen and Prince of Wales will mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France in what will be the monarch’s first overseas trip since his shock cancer diagnosis announcement.

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday that the royals will be attending commemorative events in Normany as well as the UK next month.

It comes as Camilla, 76, issued a playful warning to Charles, 75, after revealing her husband is “getting better”, joking to guests at a royal engagement: “Well, he would be [getting better] if he behaved himself.”

The Queen has been frank in her view that the King should slow down following his cancer diagnosis earlier this year – but Charles has appeared to throw himself back into public life in high spirits following the greenlight by doctors last month.

The King appeared in a buoyant mood on a visit to the Royal Opera House on Thursday night as he made a surprise appearance – which came a week after claims he snubbed Prince Harry twice on his recent visit to the UK.

Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh take part in Ceremony of the Keys

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh took part in a special Church of Scotland service during a visit to Edinburgh.

The Ceremony of the Keys was held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on Friday, to mark the start of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

The guard of honour, Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Scotland marched during the ceremony.

Chief Constable of Police Scotland, Jo Farrell also attended, and journalist, TV correspondent and British Army reservist Major-General Alastair Bruce.

During the Ceremony of the Keys the Lord High Commissioner, in this case the Duke of Edinburgh, as the King’s representative, receives the keys from the Lord Provost.

He was previously Lord High Commissioner in 2014, as Earl of Wessex, and represented his mother, the late Queen.

The Lord High Commissioner is the sovereign’s personal representative to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and is appointed by the sovereign to attend proceedings on his behalf.

The Duke, who was granted the title previously held by his father on his 59th birthday last year, will make the opening and closing addresses to the Assembly and carry out a number of official functions throughout the week.

ICYMI: Queen Camilla feted at 'Royal Rye' for literary event

Queen Camilla was welcomed at the “Royal Rye” as she took centre stage to celebrate literature in East Sussex.

In a peacock-feather patterned dress and sand-coloured coat, the Queen arrived at the Church of Saint Mary as part of her tour of the county on Thursday.

Reverend Paul White told Camilla that the coastal town of Rye was dubbed the “Royal Rye” by Queen Elizabeth I when she visited in 1573, and added that, “if you felt that was in your gift today, Royal Rye it is once again”.

Camilla met members of local organisations including the Royal Voluntary Service and Mothers’ Union at the church before walking along the street to Lamb House.

The historic Lamb House, once home to novelists Henry James, Rumer Godden and E.F. Benson, also hosts a literature collection the Queen viewed as part of a tour of the property.

A garden tea party was held for Camilla, where reading performances of Mapp and Lucia were given by Oscar-winner Hayley Mills, and actor Timothy West, who sat next to the Queen as she was offered tea.

King Charles’ surprise appearance on Royal Opera House stage with performers rounded off busy week

The King walked across the Royal Opera House stage hand in hand with performers at a gala celebrating the conductor at his coronation, on Thursday.

The event paid tribute to Sir Antonio Pappano at the end of his 22-year tenure as music director of The Royal Opera.

Performers were told Charles would be attending 20 minutes before they went on stage, and their show closed to a standing ovation.

After the curtain fell Charles and Sir Antonio spoke about the time that has passed since the coronation last May.

Sir Antonio said: “He was just so generous in his praise, and genuinely so, and that means everything, he loves music.

“He knighted me, and I’ve done several events at Buckingham Palace over the years where he’s been the engine for those things, and of course I conducted at the coronation, so we’ve done quite a few events.”

He said about the gala: “These kinds of programmes are almost impossible, with so many different pieces from one to the other, but the feeling that everybody wanted to be here, we had a full house, the King was here.”

Asked how he was feeling after the show, Charles, who has been receiving treatment for cancer, replied: “Not too bad.”

Camilla was so impressed with the results that she asked Hugo Burnand to photograph her 2005 wedding to King Charles.

“[Charles] liked what I did at the wedding enough to ask me to take some pictures of him and then the boys,” a busy Burnand explained on his way to the Royal Portraits exhibition.

The event at The King’s Gallery, which opens today (17 May), is of particular significance for Burnand as it features “the first photographs that were taken of the members of the royal family in the Victorian era”.

“It’s really fascinating because [it goes] right through until today and obviously I’ve taken quite a few pictures of the current Monarchy,” he said.

King Charles expected to attend Trooping the Colour, but by carriage

The King is expected to attend Trooping the Colour amid his cancer treatment, but by carriage instead of the traditional horseback.

King Charles is determined to attend his birthday parade in London on 15 June, say sources, with concessions as his cancer treatment continues.

Instead of riding on horseback as he did last year, the monarch will travel by carriage from Buckingham Palace and watch the pageantry from a podium.

The Buckingham Palace and Ministry of Defence have been exploring ways for several weeks to find ways for the king to be a part of the celebrations without undue risk to his health.

It is unclear if the Princess of Wales will attend the ceremony.
