“I knew from the start a couple of weeks ago when they all showed up here, apart from Brooks who was hurt, all the vice-captains showed up and we got involved early with each other, we learned the course. They came in very prepared.

“This is the greatest team of all time, you guys are unbelievable.”

Berger’s victory meant it was a record-breaking margin of victory for the US. They have been utterly imperious and will lift the trophy shortly.

Fitzpatrick finds the water at 18 and that all but hands Berger the full point. The Englishman’s Ryder Cup duck is set to go on.

Spieth and Fleetwood both find the green at 18. A birdie should be good enough to win but neither player can make it. Their par putts are almost identical and the markers are picked up sportingly and the point is halved.

English makes a costly error at the 18th, finding the water at the front of the green. And that hands Westwood victory. That ends his run of defeats at the Ryder Cup and, if it is to be his last playing appearance, ahead of the captaincy in 2023, it’s a deserved finale for one of the stalwarts of the European team.

“The Ryder Cup is a special event, it’s a lot of fun,” Dustin Johnson said after completing his victory over Paul Casey.

“Starting the week if you’d have told me I was going to go 5-0-0 I probably would’ve said you were crazy - I didn’t think I was even going to play five matches.

“It was a great week, the team played amazingly, all of us came together and we wanted to win.

“I think we just wanted it a bit more.

“It’s my first team were I was the oldest, so it’s a little different dynamic. We got along great and we all have one thing in common - that we don’t like to lose. And that showed out on the course.”
