A promising City attack comes to a disappointing end. De Bruyne slides a pass through to Jesus, who for some reason chooses to cut back instead of immediately shooting. He finds Mahrez, who in turn moves the ball on to De Bruyne. The Belgian’s cross from the byline is easily cut out.

Sterling tries to fire City back into the game, accelerating past Wan-Bissaka and drilling a shot straight at Henderson.

Out of nothing, United have a second! Shaw drives forward from the left and finds Rashford, who cuts inside and returns the ball to the left-back. He still has plenty to do, but manages to squeeze his shot through Rodri’s legs and into the bottom right corner.

City win a free kick on the left. It’s whipped in by Zinchenko and Henderson claims easily.

Off the bar! City begin the second half as they ended the first, shifting the ball confidently in United’s half. Jesus is picked out in the box and tees off Rodri, who slams a side-footed effort against the top of the crossbar, with Henderson beaten.

City get the second half underway!

A late forage forward from Martial comes to nothing and the half comes to a close. Fernandes’ very early penalty has given United a narrow lead, though City have controlled the game since the opening ten minutes or so. But the visitors have defended well and frustrated Guardiola’s in-form side.

Close! De Bruyne picks out Mahrez in space on the right of the box. He hits a low shot towards the far corner which is very nearly converted by a sliding Jesus as it skims past the post.

United break through James, who races down the right and then finds Rashford. He picks out Fernandes, whose pass towards Martial is poor. He shouts in frustration as the ball runs out for a goal kick.
