Bad news for the Giroud-hunters of Europe: David Ornstein says Chelsea's search for a replacement is over and without success, meaning the French striker will be remaining at the Bridge "regardless of whether he plays."

Follow the latest live updates from transfer deadline day as the January window builds towards a busy crescendo, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and a host of other clubs all expected to do late business in their final chance to improve their squads. Manchester United set the tone on Thursday by completing the big-money deal for midfielder Bruno Fernandes in a deal that could reach as much as £67.8m, but that could just be the start of a top-six flurry ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline.
United are understood to have seen a bid for Bournemouth striker Josh King rejected this morning, but could yet return for the Norway international given Marcus Rashford's injury-enforced spell on the sidelines. Arsenal are expected to make their second signing of the month after Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed that right-back Cedric Soares is on his way out of the club, with the Gunners looking to complete a loan move until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal. It is unlikely to be the only business in London today, with Chelsea determined to land a new striker that could also see one of their own make a switch to fierce rivals Spurs. Napoli’s Dries Merthens is being strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, and if Frank Lampard can bring in the Belgian, the expectation is that out-of-favour Olivier Giroud will be on his way out of the club. However, he may not have to move far as the French striker is keen on a move to Tottenham, who need injury cover for Harry Kane, while Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has also confirmed they have had an offer for the former Arsenal man rejected. Spurs are also interested in Willian Jose of Real Sociedad, who could yet head to the Premier League.
United have ruled out a move for Willian Jose, meaning the Brazilian will not be heading to Old Trafford in their desperate search for a striker, but there are expected to be plenty of moves elsewhere. One of the fiercest transfer battles is set to be over Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen, who despite having a deal in place to join Crystal Palace yesterday now appears to be on his way to West Ham for a medical. The one certainty appears to be that neither Liverpool nor Manchester City will be active in any capacity, but then again on deadline day you never know what’s around the corner. Follow the live updates below.
Barcelona have confirmed an agreement to sign Braga winger Francisco Trincao in the summer. The talented youngster will join in July.
More on the Giroud will-he-won't-he: Inter are back in for him, but Calciomercato say they are also trying to sign Simone Zaza, who has not made up his mind on the move. Surely it's only one or the other for Antonio Conte at Inter, which still leaves Lazio and Spurs as trying to bring in Giroud.

There is not any incoming business expected around league leaders Liverpool today, but there may be an outgoing move. The Echo are reporting that Nathaniel Clyne, out all season with an ACL injury, is ready to resume training - and will be allowed to leave on loan if he can find a club. He's out of contract in the summer, too.
Signing complete
Another new addition for West Brom - they've concluded a permanent deal for Kamil Grosicki from Hull City.
As it looks as though they'll miss out on Jarrod Bowen, Crystal Palace are having to look elsewhere for reinforcements. One potential target is Bournemouth's Jordon Ibe, who worked with Roy Hodgson briefly at Liverpool. Sky Sports suggest that the deal is not advanced at present, however.

A European update now: Emre Can has landed in Dortmund and will sign with them on a loan with obligation to buy deal, says Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Also moving out of Italy is Fiorentina's Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is departing Fiorentina on loan to Besiktas.
There is also a contingent travelling to London from Lazio, hoping to arrange a deal for Olivier Giroud, but Spurs still seem in the driving seat there - as long as Chelsea can find a replacement.
Rangers have the Ianis Hagi deal locked up, but they want more. STV are reporting that Steven Gerrard wants Burnley forward Matej Vydra, which might tie in with that earlier rumour of Everton's Niasse moving to Turf Moor.
Do Manchester United know what kind of striker they want? The Telegraph report that earlier in the window they made an approach for Southampton striker Danny Ings, only to be firmly and irrevocably knocked back. This comes after the news of a more recent bid for Bournemouth's Josh King, also rejected.
Spurs may yet have one more outgoing deal to conclude. They have been trying to offload Victor Wanyama for around £8 million this month, but with nobody willing to pay up for a player who has barely featured for the past two seasons, a loan move to Celtic could be sorted. James Olley of the Evening Standard says Spurs will have to subsidise part of Wanyama's £60k-a-week wages.
A new Premier League move on the cards - The Telegraph's John Percy says Wolves centre-back Ryan Bennett is headed to Leicester for a medical. A loan move is probable, after Bennett had recently fallen out of favour under Nuno, and the knock-on effect will be that Filip Benkovic leaves Leicester on loan to Bristol City.
Not quite an hour-and-a-half after breaking the news that Spurs were making a big push for Gareth Bale, Matt Lawton is back with more...saying Spurs no longer feel the deal will be done.
"There have been real efforts made to come up with a deal that gets over that obvious hurdle concerning his wages," he tweets. Will Spurs have to be satisfied with just Bergwijn, or will they add Giroud too?

Deal completed
Hearts have been busy this month and Marcel Langer has now joined the club from Schalke.
More on that failed Newcastle midfielder bid: Sky's Keith Downie says he's had it confirmed by "a high-level source at Lille" that the mystery player was Boubakary Soumare and that the deal was worth up to £45m including add-ons.
Soumare said no and, though Newcastle might push again for his signature in the summer, it seems an improbable deal - he has been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal, Spurs, Man United and other big sides around Europe.
Done deal
Southampton right-back Cedric Soares has officially joined Arsenal. It's a loan to the end of the season, at which point he is out of contract at Saints and can move on a free transfer.

BBC Sheffield journalist Andy Giddings reports that Sheffield United attacking midfielder Ravel Morrison is close to a move to Middlesbrough. Meanwhile, the Blades are still hopeful of signing both Panagiotis Retsos and Richairo Zivkovic today.
Sky Sports report that Burnley are considering a late move for Everton striker Oumar Niasse. The Senegalese striker has only made three cameo appearances in the league this season.

Rangers have signed Romanian talent Ianis Hagi from Genk, with an initial loan and option to buy.

A tale of two Duncans, now.
Serie A side Fiorentina have completed the €15 million signing of Alfred Duncan from Sassuolo, a powerful midfielder. However, they'll be keeping hold of former Liverpool youth striker Bobby Duncan for now, who was set to join Sunderland on loan - but the League One club have pulled the plug on the deal, reports James Pearce of the Athletic.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has just said in his press conference that he doesn't think the move for Josh King will be revived. "I don't think we will do any more business, no. I don't think so [we'll improve the offer]."
Eddie Howe will probably be pleased to hear that, but United fans might not - looks as though they won't sign the striker that the boss had earlier said they needed.

Krzysztof Piatek has snubbed the Premier League for the Bundesliga, with Hertha Berlin sealing the forward’s signature ahead of Spurs and Chelsea due to their offer being for the permanent transfer, rather than a loan. The Polish forward’s struggles this season saw the Rossoneri snap up Zlatan Ibrahimovic to drive their second half of the season.
